Approach

Anupy's publisher, Agate Publishing, provided a mock layout which we used to guide our photographic composition. We left blank space where we knew text would be overplayed on the cover. For double spreads we moved objects to the left or the right of where the fold would be. Anupy felt the styling of the previous version of the book had been a bit dark. To address this we shot darker recipes on lighter backgrounds and introduced pops of color where we could - whether with the use of props or by adding ingredients to the recipes themselves. We also shot in natural light, which posed a bit of a challenge as the season changed from winter to spring. We moved our sessions from morning to afternoon and our setup from an east to a west facing window.
